Qrs. 6th S. Dist. Va. Fredericksburg, Va. Nov: 11th 67. Respectfully forwarded to Bvt: Brig: Gen'l O. Brown, Asst. Com'r. the verdict of the jury in these cases seem unjustly severe. The act of going to Mr. Trice was committed under an impression (in their ignorance) that their political rights and duty required them to interest themselves to the extent of forcing all colored people to attend political meetings. I am well satisfied that these men in committing this act - had an advisor who cannot be directly implicated and that the demanding and obtaining of the due bill was not premeditated - but the injustice of the moment under a supposed right - Mr. Trice having committed an assault upon Chew Christmas 1865, promising John Chew $18.00/100 if he would not report him (E. Trice) to the Freedmens Bureau. Under all the circumstances I believe the condemned have suffered quite enough and that justice would be satisfied should the Executive power be exercised to the extent of a full pardon of these men. Sgd. James Johnson Bvt: Lt. Col & S.A.C. 541 Bu. R.F.& A.L. Hd. Qrs. Asst. Comr: Va. Richmond, Va. Nov: 14th 67. Respectfully forwarded to Bvt. Col. S.F. Chalfin, A.A.
