608 Respectfully referred to Bvt Maj: W.R. Morse. S.A. Comr for investigation and report. O. Brown Bvt Brig Genl Vols Asst Comr J.259.3.Vol.1867. Hambrick, P.R. Lt. & S.A. Comr 638. Bureau R. F and A. Lds. Hd. Qrs. S.A. Comr. 6. S. Dist: Fredericksburg Va, Dec 13/67. Respectfully forwarded to Bvt: Brig Genl O. Brown. This woman, is truly to be pitied. She has a child about 4. months old with her, her other (4) children, she was obliged to leave in Northumberland Co: for want of means to take them home to Richmond. She intended to walk and carry her child, but the inclement weather prevented. and should her husband not be able to send for her. I think it would be an act of charity to give her Bureau Transportation from Fredericksburg to Richmond. (signed) James Johnson, Bvt Lt Col & S.A.C. Bureau R. F and A. Lands Head Qrs. Asst Comr of Va. Richmond Va. Dec, 16th 1867. Respectfully referred to Lieut. P.R. Hambrick, S.A.C. for information, in regard to the ability and willingness of the husband (Sam, Saunders) to care for his family. O. Brown Bvt Brig Genl Vols Asst Comr L.423. 3 Vol 1867. White, Geo. Q. Capt & chf Q.M. &c Bureau R. F and A. Lands Hd Qrs Asst Comr of Va. Richmond Va. Dec 16th 1867. Respectfully referred to Capt Geo. Q. White, chf Q.M. &c approved, with authority to purchase the wood herein requested. O. Brown Bvt Brig Genl Vols Asst Comr J.260. 3 Vol 1867. Virginia 1st Mil Dis. Bureau R.F. and A. Lands Hd. Qrs: 6th S. Dist. Va. Fredericksburg, Dec. 12th 67. Respectfully forwarded to Bvt: Brig Genl O. Brown, Asst Comr of Va. 609 with the recommendation that this case be forwarded to Maj. Genl Schofield, requesting the issuing of an Order setting aside the verdict of the Jury and a trial by Mil. Commission. The bad character of Campbell, - the intimacy of Campbell with Upshaims wife for several months past to gather with the offence of shooting with intent (no doubt) to kill should in my opinion be sufficient grounds for settling the verdict of the jury aside and trial by commission ordered. Compare this Verdict with the acts of Magistrates and Juries in cases heretofore reported to you from Caroline Co: where Colored are defendents - and you will observe that there is two kinds of justice administered - one for whites and one for colored. (signed) James Johnson Bvt: Lieut Col & S.A. Comr Bureau R.F and A Lands Head, Qrs Asst Comr of Va. Richmond Va. Dec 16th/67. Respectfully forwarded to Bvt: Col S.F. Chalfin A.A. Genl. O. Shedd of this city, who says he knows nothing at all of the claims referred to within. In settlement of Claims for work in the Q.M. Dept. duplicate vouchers from the Q.M. who employed the claimant are required. Enclosed is form of application. The claim can be made and filed through this office. By order of Maj Genl Howard Comr (signed) Wm. Fowler, Agt &c in chg of Div. Bureau R. F and A. Lands. Head Qrs Asst Comr of Va. Richmond Va. Dec 16th 1867 Respectfully returned to Bvt Maj W.R.
