6. Slanderous report made of me after Serving the Government in the Army faithfully and honestly for nearly twelve years with the confidence and respect of all the officers under whom I have done duty. I have said I wished to get out of not only the Bureau but the Army, for I felt as if I was being taxed too heavily by putting one office after another on my Shoulders with all their attending responsibilities. Supt. of Freedmen, Quartermaster, Commissary and Provost Marshal for a whole section of Country with not even a Lieut. to assist me in any one of them, and three of said offices to run at one and the same time and doing the duty of three officers, receiving the pay of one, with the rank of a Captain. I speak of these things now General because they are drawn from me by my good name being attacked by some base and probably, (for all I know to the contrary,) envious Character who perhaps is anxious for my place, a place that God knows I never sought, nor ever wanted, but in which
