Reports the establishment of schools in Mo & Kas. 8 schools & 12 teachers - about 1200 persons are receiving instruction - Before bringing teachers here Chaplain Wright assured me we could have joint possession with Mrs Phelps - on arriving here Mrs P denied any right or privilege being reserved for freedmen, but as a favor allowed us to fit up a room to use till the first of May when she expects to remove the buildings - Asks that Gov't give him or his society some right to occupy Hospt'l Building for school & Freedmen Orphan Home, or to Mrs Phelps provided she will care for both classes. |
