-9- 04.13 31. [[stamp]] SMITHSONIAN. [[/stamp]] .1. One Painting. By an Unknown Artist. Period Uncertain. Chinese. Painted on silk, in colors and gold. Kuan-yin enthroned. The Chinese goddess of mercy, depicted in superb dignity, is seated on an elaborate table of rockery, in the open air, two halos encompassing her and a projection of rock, canopy-like above, from a rocky wall on the right giving the suggestion of a grotto. Arms of rock support her forearms like the arms of a chair, and an upward-curving projection of the rock table or seat, on her right hand, holds a tall, slender and delicate vase. Back of her throne appear bamboo trees. The goddess faces the front, very slightly turned toward the left, and her right ankle rests upon her left knee, while the left foot is posed upon a conventionalized lotus flower issuing from a stream below. Branch coral also rises above the water, and on a rock in the foreground a boy stands looking up at the goddess in devout adoration. The apparel of the goddess is in rich color, with much deep vermilion, and her headdress is resplendent with jewels, while her face, and nude arms, breast and feet, are in gold (now largely vanished but leaving the indelible tone of its rich quality on the silk.) Silk a dark brown, with dull mahogany tones. Without signature or seal. Received as a panel and still remains in that form. Height, 38 1/2"; width, 13 3/8". Auctioneer's fee, 10%, francs 590 Mr. Bing's Com., 5%, francs 324.50 Packing, insurance, etc., francs 25. francs 6,839.50 or $1,324.58 plus express, duty, & entry 7.80 $1,332.38 [[checkmark]] 32.
