[[page number]] 382 [[/page number]] War. Dept. Endorsement on communication of I.A Benis A.A.A Genl who forwards letter of W.L. Miller who requests in behalf of Trustees of the Biddles memorial Institute to have transferred to Rev. SC. Alexander & self three buildings used for Hospital purposes during the rebellion and since then occupied by U.S. Troops stationed at Charlotte, N.C. [[Footnote 1]] Raleigh, Feby 3. Refd to Lt Col. Thos P. Johnston. Febry 5. Recd back with endorsement that one thousand dollars has already been appropriated to the Biddle Memorial Institute Eight hundred & seventy seven of which has been expended in constructing and in the purchase of Lumber. The buildings at Charlotte are on my Quartermaster papers. Authority was given me by Secy of War through the Quartermaster General dated Washington March 26" 1866 to sell any of these buildings for school or Religious purposes for the benefit of Freedmen. A number has been sold for that purpose at a mere nominal price The remainder have been sold at public sale but are held for any other disposition Bureau R.F. & A.L. Hd Qrs Asst. Comr. N.C Raleigh N.C. Febry 6- 1868 Respectfully returned to Maj Genl. O.O. HOward Commissioner Attention invited to endorsement of Lt Col. Thos P. Johnston Chf. Quartermaster. The donations to this Institutions have already been large, consisting of money, Clothing, blankets &c and in the present limited state of our school funds care should be taken not to draw too heavily in favor of one institution [[Footnote 2]] Jacob F. Chur. Act'g Asst. Adjt Genl. In absence of Asst. Comr [[Footnote 1]] W.371 [[Footnote 2]] Febry. 15. Recd. back Filed [[line across page]] Tucker Endorsement on communication of R.S. Tucker who requests that Fair grounds and buildings vacted by the Bureau be turned over to the N.C Agricultural Society. [[Footnote 1]] Nov 15. 1867 Referred to Col. J.V. Bomford. Comdg Post of Raleigh with information that it is the intention of the Bureau to abandon the Hospital situated on the property and which will then be restored to the owners so far as the jurisdication of this Bureau extends H Qrs Post. Raleigh. Refd to R.S. Tucker. A formal application for the restoration of the Fair Grounds should be made to Maj Genl. Canby. As in the event of the application being granted the present Guard House at the Fair Ground would no longer be available for Military purposes and and it would become necessary to receive authority from Charleston [[Footnote 1]] T.25 [[end page]] [[start page]] [[page number]] 383 [[/page number]] to construct a new one which would of course involve the consent of the Dist Commander to dispense with and turn over the present Guard House. Dec. 8/67. Hd. Qrs. Post. Raleigh. Retd to R.S. Tucker so far as the Military authorities of this Post are concerned they have no lease upon the Buildings except the Guard House which will be retained in accordance with your wishes and that of the Govt. With the exceptions of the Post Guard house the buildings are not upon the Qr. Mr. return of property at this Post. Bureau R.F. & A.L. Hd Qrs Asst. Comr. NC. Raleigh NC. Febry. 7- 1868 Respectfully returned to R.S. Tucker Esq. The within named property so far as this Bureau is interested is hereby restored to the Agriculture Society of N.C. By order of Col & Bvt. Maj Genl. N.A Miles Asst. Comr. N.C. Jacob F. Chur. Act'g Asst. Adj't. Genl. [[line across page]] Dillon Continuation on endorsement of Bvt. Maj Dillon who requests instructions relative to property held as abandoned property and not claimed by owners under recent orders. [[Footnote 1]] Ford. to Maj Genl. O.O. Howard. Recd back Jany. 29-. Approved. Authority is hereby given to place Freedmen upon these lands Bureau R.F. & AL Hd. Qrs Asst. Comr. NC Raleigh NC. Jan. 29. 1868 Respectfully returned to Bvt. Maj R. Dillon. Asst. Sub. Asst. D119 [[line across page]] Thompson Endorsement on communication of Wm A. Thompson Agent, who forwards letter of Joseph Bauer and others who states that they were members of Co G. 119 Regt. U.S.C.T. and one year ago placed their discharge papers in the hands of Thomas S. Smyth U.S. Claim Agent at Taylorsville Tenn in order to collect additional bounty wish to be informed if their claims have been settled if they have not [[Footnote 1]] [[Footnote 1]] EV p586 T.31 [[double underlined]] over [[/double underlined]]
