Dear Germain:

All the coincidences do not happen to you as witness the following letter received a few hours after your departure:

Madrid 11 May 1959

Mr J J C etc

Dear Mr. Cunningham:

My mother told me some time ago that you expected to visit Madrid in February or March of this year. I write this letter to you in case you have changed your mind, as the date of your proposed visit has passed.

You may be interested to know that we have a painting by Lucas Jordaens for sale, oil painting size 1.95 m. by 1.65 m as per snapshots enclosed. The fotografs are not very good and should you need better ones, please let me know so as to order some.

There is also a portrait study, oil painting of an old man by J. B. Tiepolo size 0.48 x .0.62 m. and the possibility of selling a serie of 35 drawings by Goya and 2 oil paintings of Goya representing the King Carlos IV and the other one the queen, size 1.50 x 1.06 m, both of them have been in an exposition in England.

Should you need more data on the subject I will be glad to send them as soon as I obtain them.

Expecting your news at the earliest, and with kindest regards, I remain

Yours very truly

Sgd J. Salinas

Conde de Salinas Almagro 25, Madrid

P.S. Write to me in English.

Now, Germain, I have given you the information regarding his mother, the "cooperative"" Duquesa de Lecera, their telephone numbers, etc. I will write Count de Salinas that my trip has necessarily been postponed until, say July, but that I am asking a friend to call him by telephone or even to call upon him in Madrid after arranging a meeting....and the usual chat about my implicit confidence in any decisions you may make. This based on his saying he wanted to hear [[underlined]] at the earliest. [[/underlined]]

[[handwritten line]]

Anothe coincidence of a less attractive sort was the reply from the Dominican Republic, one of several [[underline]] supplied carbons [[/underline]] of which I enclose. But I am going to venture another tentative.....to Chateaubriand in Brazil, for I have good information as to how that gentleman blackmails the local wealthy into buying the pictures for the Museo, or else having their business ruined. He gets the credit for the gifts, of course. I shall say that the priced asked "at present" by the owner is seventy. The letter will be couched in much the same language as that in which I proposed the purchase to the Trujillo crowd, that is^[[,] intimating but not stressing the authorship as being Ber....jo. I see no reason for not offering it, and then insisting that the payment be made into Morgan & Co. on (or at) delivery of painting. Otherwise....no delivery.
