Dear Dr. Weninger:

I was very glad to be able to talk with you this afternoon, but as the telephone connection was not very good, I will write you a few words to confirm.

It is my understanding that you have a friend, a Roentgen-ologist, who is glad to experiment with taking some photographs with his X-Ray equipment. I believe you said also that he would be able to take some photographs under the infra-red lamp. I am very glad that you are able to arrange this matter and I hope it may be done on Tuesday, as I would like to be able to send the results to my friend in New York as quickly as possible.

The painting itself may be too high and wide to permit a satisfactory single picture with the x-ray machine. Do you not agreethat it would be well to have several films, to cover all the important figures (the 3 Marys, the Angel, the figure in the background,) and the sky in the places where the clouds have been removed. It is especially important to have the x-rays of the central Mary, because I have an idea that the original paint may be underneath the red cloak, and the heavily re-painted blue dress. Also an x-ray photo of the little house in upper left corner, as well as the castle on the mountain.

I think it would be wise to Register the package when sending it and to save time, I wish you would send them to my friend,

AIRMAIL EXPRESS to

Mrs. K.T. Parker,
5 East 57th Street,
New York 22, New York.

who will deliver them to me when I arrive by air, in New York. Please be sure to send the photographs my AIR MAIL to New York as ship mail takes nearly two weeks as against two days by air.

AS I told you, my friend has got the photography catalogue of the Schaffhausen Exhibition and the Schone monograph with the two expertises of Friedlander and Panofsky. As soon as [[he has?]] the x-ray and infra-red photographs, he will want to fly over and see the painting. So everything that you can do to hasten the pictures (films) will hasten the day that he will come to you.
With kindest regards, and many thanks, I am
Sincerely yours,
John J. Cunningham
