March 28, 1957

Dear Sir Alec:

Your letter of March 25th, with enclosures, duly reached me. I hasten to pass on to you some of my client's comments as regards the descriptions:-

A. "The property of a gentleman" is all right.

B. re the [[underlined]] limoge enamel triptych: [[/underlined]] He is of the opinion of [[underlined]] surpressing [[/underlined]] the last paragraph, starting "for a similar panel in identical frame...." for it does not add anything to the item and may create a confusion in the mind of those who do not realize that such works of art were of course repeated.

C. re description [[underlined]] painting by Lancret: [[/underlined]] Why not add the bibliography "Lancret" by George Wildenstein as previously indicated to you. It is mentioned in the catalogue of the official exhibition in Copenhagen. For your information should you not have the Copenhagen catalogue which was made up by the French Museum officials, I am sending herein a copy of the wording referring to the Lancret
"LE JEU DU CHEVAL FONDU
Toile. - H. o,540; L. 0,730.
Doit être le tableau qui a figuré à l'Exposition au profit des inondés du Midi (1887), no. 82, et appartenant alors à Mme. Kestner.
Cf. G. Wildenstein: op.cit., p. 86, no. 224 du catal.
À MM. Jacques Seligmann. "

Also I consider that the note alluding to "Le Jeu du Pied - de - Boeuf"in Potsdam which figured in the description I forwarded to you, is of interest as such paintings of children by Lancret are indeed rare.

D. re the [[underlined]] Schall painting: [[/underlined]] it would seem hereto that the bibliography I called to your attention referring to the book "Jean Frederic Schall by Andre Girodie should be included. It is of moment for it is considered the best and probably only reference book on Schall.

E. I assume that your "note" at the bottom of the page "Schall of course is much later than Louis XIV"is not part of the description.

As regards the dates of the sales, May 14th is O.K. for the limoge and marble head and do let me hear from you as soon as you will have been able to set a date for the two paintings.
