Mr. Michael Vogelius
P.O. Box 116
San Rafael
California

Dear Mr. Vogelius:
Please pardon this rather belated answer to your letter of some weeks ago.
Juan Fernandez is an almost ideal paradise from some points of view. There are no poisonous or noxious animals on the island. The only pest I can recall is on that is very familiar to you if you visit San Francisco in the fall months. Like all garden spots, California included, it is heavily infested with fleas at certain times of the year. Knowing California as well as I do, they are a discomfort to which on can get accoustomed. Diseases of all kinds are scarce, the islanders being apparently a very healthy lot. Their greatest trouble is with the "third great plague."
Should you ever care to visit the island, there is a once yearly excursion conducted by the Pacific Steam Navigation Company. You could learn all about the terms and sailings at their San Francisco office.
Sincerely,
Waldo L. Schmitt,
Curator of Marine Invertebrates.
