For Prize Contest

My parents believed that everybody should have an advanced education. Since we lived in the country we had to go away from home for high school and college. With a family of five boys and one girl we realized that there might be difficulty in making "ends meet". For several years things went well; then came reverses. There was little cash for the next winter. board was the biggest problem.

We had always had a good garden, but only enough for ourselves. When someone offered to board us if we would furnish the food that garden seemed to be our salvation.

Two things were necessary – the garden must be larger, and only the best seeds planted. Grandmother had recommended Burpee's seeds for several years. We followed her advice. All summer we tended, canned, and stored, feeding the surplus to the chickens.

When fall came we left for school, happy in the fact that our schooling would not be hindered. This plan worked so satisfactorily that for several years we did likewise.

Now, most of us are through school and have good positions, but I know that we owe much to that Burpee planted garden.
