^[[226]] ^[[177833]] For Prize Contest Life began for me in a barren, Mid-western, rented market- garden where through the years we tried nearly everything in Burpee's catalog from cabbage to peanuts And still I see our flowers -Sweet Peas along the fence by the side gate; Holly-hocks opposite; beds of Asters , Verbenas, Petunias, not forgetting Gourds, Ornamental Grasses or Shirley Poppies which seeded themselves in a corner of the lawn nor the long flower-beds by the Western windows where the Morning Glories called us early mornings and the Four-O'Clocks kept us home after-noons. Even as the butter-flies and bees that hovered over it at noon-day there came a Pilgrimage of visitors to our garden- Teachers, Preachers, Singers, Capitalists, Promoters. Many became our friends some returning to settle or develope our valley thus building a town nearby with better schools. So Burpee's Seeds provided me with, work, play, health, home, friends, close companion-ship with Parents, a better education besides inspiring intense love of Beauty, Poetry, Pictures, Nature and even God. And now is my child-hood repeated in my children leading to a study of Birds, a collection of Wild Plants, and interest in Landscape Gardening, and the enjoyment of many happy hours by all in our garden. Sincerely Yours, Mrs. B.L. McCullough Bangor, Wash.
