Lying in a hospital at a point on the southern lee of the equator, where life for a white man is not yet possible, a victim of tropical disease, life and energy ebbing away, I one day found in a heap of varied literature an American treatise on an improved method of growing onions.

Memory- with visions of happy hours in a garden in company with Nature's children - followed by Hope -- with hands full of promise---brought to me the desire and the will to live. Indifference died, the tide of life flowed again and a wanderer returned.
