ART AND THE PROFIT MOTIVE
[[bullet point]] We usually shy away from a discussion of art in terms of dividends and profits. Occasionally, however, a question is aked to which an answer must be given in dollars and cents parlance if it is to be fully comprehended.
Such a question was asked recently of a collector friend by a well-dressed, prosperous-looking business man in a middle western art museum. "But how does all this pay?" He was referring to the obviously large investment in land, buildings, and works of art.
The collector undertook to answer him (and he did so successfully, we think) in terms of cultural values:
You see, the dividends that people receive from a knowledge of art can't be measured in terms of dollars and cents, any more than the pleasure you receive from a set of perfect golf clubs or a good hunter can be measured in
