#5561 A statue in white marble, of the French school of the Renaissance Period, Sixteenth Century.

An ample study made by Prof Louis Reau, herewith enclosed, with documentary proofs, leaves no doubt that this statue is by GERMAIN PILON (1535-1590).

The statue represents "SAINTE BARBE" and most probably the idealized portrait of CATHERINE DE MEDICI, the wife of HENRY II, King of France. Ground for this belief is found in the rich court costume in which the saint is clad. She is draped in an ermine coat, her forehead is ornated with a pearl diadem; at her feet on her right, is a small tower and her right hand probably held a sword - both being the symbols of this Holy personage.

Height: 5' 9-1/2"

This statue comes from the Chateau d'Eterville, property of the Vicomte d'Aigneau (Calvados).

Price.......... $ 40,000.-
