[[preprinted]] FAIRMONT HOTEL [[image - drawing of Fairmont Hotel logo]] NOB HILL San Francisco [[/preprinted]] September 9,1940 My dear Germain: I was terribly sorry that you did not find it possible to fly out here for a brief holiday. If you have a fortnight in this month of September,do come out to the Coast, and we will spend it together. I shall be here for a few days longer;then to visit some friends at Monterey for a couple of days;then to Santa Barbara-Hotel Mar Monte-for a few days;then to Los Angeles and La Jolla, going to Kansas City the last days of September, and so back to New York via Cleveland. A line here or to the Mar Monte at Santa Barbara will reach me. The exhibition is not as fine as last year,as one misses the great Italian masterpieces which were here;but, on the whole,it is a very interesting and varied show;and the group of old master drawings is superb. But I cannot imagine what possessed Heil to include the awful paintings or the Ringling collection, veritable eyesores.
