But I had tea with Mrs. Spencer Penrose, and again admired the superb furniture which came from your firm. She hasn't one decent painting in her house. I have promised to show her every Renoir in New York, when she comes down in the Fall; so we must put our heads together at that time. Mrs. Carlton, also, has asked me to "educate her" and take her around New York. A lonely, alcoholic widow, of no family or cultural background, but with a lovely house and a good deal of money which she gives to charity. Her house absolutely without a picture! It may be an opportunity, when I can take her about a bit. Then I went to The High Sierras, Lake Tahoe and the Yosemite and the Sequoia Gigantea grove; marvellous places; and have just descended to the Coast for a while, to make visits at Monterey, Hollywood, and La Jolla, before starting for Texas and Oklahoma. I saw Ludington, who is leaving shortly; and dined last night with Donald Bear, who has just hung a wonderful Impressionist show from Durand-Ruel in his delightful little
