[[left page blank]] [[end page]] [[start page]] July 16, Got up at 5 oclock to the music of a cold rain. Stopped raining after breakfast but continued cloudy, cold & wet. Hunted all forenoon but got nothing of account, took up some of my traps & set them over, didn't catch a thing in them. Sketched a little, skinned a Chipmunk & Gopher, looked up a few plants in botany. I hunted some more in afternoon, watched for bats in evening, saw three but didn't get a shot. They have left the valley since I began shooting at them. " [[ditto for: July]] 17, More rain in night & nothing in my traps but one Neotoma. Hunted till noon. Only got two gophers - S. 13lineatus. Stuffed the Neotoma & gophers & hunted in afternoon, didn't kill a thing, but found an Arctomys & set a trap for it. Watched for bats in evening in a new place, only got one shot & missed.
