July 22. Sunday, clear & cool. Wrote letters & read some.

" [[ditto for: July]] 23. Went out at daylight & hunted till breakfast, only got 2 birds, hunted from breakfast ill noon, got an Arctomys flaviventris & a little Rabbit, & a lot of birds. Spent a full hour trying to get a shot at a Dendroicia auduboni, that was singing & flying around in tops of tall pines, got it at last & felt well paid for the trouble. It is the first of the species that I have seen. A cloudy evening & bats came out early, had several good shots & got one, brought down another but couldnt find it. This is the first of the kind I have seen. dont know its name.

" [[ditto for: July]] 24, Hunted till breakfast, got one X bill. After breakfast skinned a few things which took till 10:30
