Aug. 4. When I awoke in morning found that we were on top of the Laramie Mts. in a broad grassy valley with high granite peaks & ridges all around.
There are some ranches in valies & lots of horses & cattle feeding in the vallies. Clear spring brooks & good water are abundant. Many of the plants & flowers are new to me & some kinds I have not seen between here & the Black Hills.
It is a splendid clear, cold morning & we have breakfast & are off early on the road, & watching for everything of interest. As soon as the sun is up high enough to begin to warm up a little we see a few Tamias quadrivittatus & from the stage count five Arctomys flaviventris sunning themselves on the rocks. One Sciurus hudsoncus is seen & after it grows a little warmer the first Spermophilus richardsoni; then they may be seen, sitting up like stakes all along the road.

Sciurus hudsoncus = Think it is Vernon's misspelling of Sciurus hudsonicus -@siobhanleachman
