Dec. 16. Sunday.
Camped near Panguich. snow an inch deep.  ice on pond holds a horse.
Warm & thawing through day. river open.

Thomomys & Arvicolas numerous in valley. Mallards & some other ducks abundant.

" [[Ditto for: Dec.]] 17. Made 25 miles, ascent steeper than before, country rather hilly than mountainous, some forests of Pinus ponderosa & spruce. Pinus edulis & cedar over hills. valley covered with A. tridentata, brush willows & Argentea shepherdi along river.

Snow one or two inches deep at Panguich & 4 to 6 deep where we camp tonight. 

Thomomys hills numerous, Skunk tracks & holes & Badger tracks & holes seen. Lepus texianus tracks very numerous - 2 killed. birds scarce.

Thawed in day. very cold at night.
