8800 feet, & this & Abes concolor continue up the valley into the old crater bottom.
At 8900 feet I left my horse & went up the N. side of caƱon which slopes to the S.E., very steep.
The slope began with only Pinus flexilis & P. douglasi & popples. Picea englemani & Abes concolor begin on the side hill at 9300 (though common in the bottom & on the South side of valley)
Pinus - aristata begins & P. douglasi runs out at 9700 feet. P. flexilis is still common.
It was getting late & I went no higher.
This slope is heavily timbered with conifers & is as steep as stares can lay.
The S. side of valley is a bank of yellow Popples with with only here & there a bunch of conifers. It would be useless to climb it
Picea englemani & Abes concolor are scattered over the south side - facing N.E. - from where they begin in the bottom at 8700 & 8800 feet upwards.
Came back & camped in the corner of Smiths field. Borrow an armfut of oats for a bed. Folks all gon & house locked.
Caught a little speckled snake at 9000 ft.
The valley is full of raspberry [[strikethrough]] ies [[/strikethrough]] bushes & must have been a fine place for Bear & Turkeys once. Saw old Bear tracks on popple trees. Saw 4 Eagles.
