Oct. 11 Left Prescott at 8 A.M. on the stage for Phoenix by the Black Cañon road. 
At Prescott the barometer registered 5400 at starting. Prescott is in a rough group of rocy peals & mountains. there are Pinus ponderosa & cedars & piñons [[line in margin]] & evergreen oak bushes all through & around town. It is very rocky. The Ponderosas are small & keep mostly to N. slopes. The cedars are mostly the square barked kind. The hills are covered with Bears Grass.
Thomas' Ranch, 15 miles from Prescott, 4250. No cedars in the valley, or other trees, but can see them on the high hills around. Begin to see Lophortyx gambeli.
Mayers Ranch, 35 miles from Prescott, 4550 feet. Stopped here for dinner at 2 P.M. No cedars here. Farms in valley.
Hackberry Creek, 4250 feet. Mesquit (P. juliflora) begins here in valley, & Tamias harrisi are numerous & two Mimus pollyglottis seen & some Harporynchus erissalis.
Antelope station, 3900 feet. Polyverde trees begin at 3450 feet on S. slope of the Antelope Mts. The trees are small & scrubby.
