Oct. 16 Left Benson at 7:30 A.M.
Followed up the San Pedro Valley to Fairbank. A small stream runs in the river bed, there are springs & wet marshes & ponds. There is grass in the valley & some ranches.
From near Fairbank to Sonoita is a smoothe, rolling, grassy plain with much stock grazing & ranches & lots of mounds of Dipodomys (not deserti).
New Old Camp Crittenden the Santa Rita Mts. are quite high & oaks are common. Then the road runs through a rocky caƱon full of Wallnut & sycamore trees & Cottonwoods. This canon is beautiful & has a rapid creek tumbling through it.
Oaks run high upon the Mts.
The rest of the way is hilly & rough & bare. Some small ranches in the valley. Callabasis is low & the valley is full of wild sunflowers & weeds & some trees.
The upland looks smoothe & grassy.
Thence we rise in going to Nogalis & it becomes rough & stony.
Cottonwoods & Wal[[strikethrough]] l [[/strikethrough]]nut [[Walnut]] trees in valley, Oaks on hills. Nogalis is Mexican for Walnut [[strikethrough]] trees [[/strikethrough]]. Looked around at Nogales & decided to return to Callabasis.
