Oct. 30 Dr. Stejneger went to Ft. Huachuca in morning & I took a later train for Nogales. The custom house officers would not let my traps pass without paying 10 [[cent symbol]] a pound duty on them & as the time was passed for paying duty, they said I would have to wait till tomorrow.
Finally after much delay & jabbering among themselves, they said I could take them through if I wouldnt sell them. They emptied my trunk & pulled everything to pieces & left me to pack it over. I finally got things packed in time to take the 7 P.M. train for Magdalena, Mexico, & arrived there at 12 P.M.
Bought $26.00 Mexican money for $20.00 of Uncle Sams at Nogales. The fare from Benson to Nogales is 10 [[cent symbol]] a mile.
From Nogales to Magdalena there are three rates; 1st: 2nd, or 3rd class, of $3.00, 2.25 & 1.80 for the 60 miles.
As this is in Mexican money the real cost is 30% less. I took 2nd class fare & enjoyed riding on a cushionless seat. Otherwise it was good.
