to collect, The House Mts. are near, are a flat topped bunch of bare, rocky hills.
The R.R. follows down a crooked & narrow valley & makes great curves again to lessen the [[strikethrough]] d [[/strikethrough]] grade. We soon leave the creek & are between low, stony hills, which seem dry & uninteresting. Reach Sanderson at 7 oclock & stop for supper. It is dark here but the moon is shining & shows the same bare, stony hills & as near as I can tell, it is the same to Langtry.
Reached Langtry at 10 P.M. 195 miles from Marfa. Found a restaurant where they have some beds in one corner & was put in with a black Texan.

Jan. 28 A nice cool morning but not cold, got out & began to get acquainted with the town & people & surrounding country.
Found for a town a depo & two little stores & saloons combined & my restaurant. There is a bunch of soldiers camped between town & the river.
I could'nt find the river till a man told me it was down in that hole just across the R.R. about 40 rods from town. It runs through a narrow cañon about 200 feet deep The rock is all limestone & is cut into numerous side cañons by the water.
