April 6 Sunday, Rained part of day, snow all gone but drifts in shady places. Birds coming lively.

" [[Ditto for: April]] 7 Went to town early, got a telegram to start for Valentine, Nebraska. Packed up & got ready in P.M.

" [[Ditto for: April]] 8 Left Elk River at 4: P.M. & had to stay in Minneapolis till 8:40 in morning. Weather warm & snow all gone except rare patches.
frost mostly out of ground & some plowing done. Vegetation hardly started.

A cold, windy morning, the Missis[[insertion]] s [[/insertion]]ippi [[Mississippi]] R. is open & the smaller streams, ponds open
Lakes open along edges.
Started out on the C. St. P. M. & O. R. R. 
Followed up Minnesota River to Mankato, then out onto prairie. & prairie all the rest of the way. Most of the lakes open after getting on the prairie. 3 Cormorants seen at Mankato, Franklins Gulls on lakes. Very windy, few birds seen. 
Men seeding with fur overcoats on 
Vegetation not started. Reached Sioux City at dark & had to wait till 9 A.M. in morning.
