R. & all the side streams are high & steep. A little frost in morning. Progne subis, 1 [[male symbol]] in Missouri Valley & lots of Passer domesticas building nests. Followed up the broad rich valley of the Elkhorn as far as O'Niel. A fine farming country, large fields, & great cribs full of corn. Dark at [[strikethrough]] V [[/strikethrough]] Long Pine, couldnt see the country any farther. Reached Valentine at 10 oclock A warm day, clear. " [[Ditto for: April]] 11 Went to P.O. first, got mail, then took a tramp over prairie & in to the creek valley N. of town. Liked the looks of the country, engaged board at a ranch got a team to take me down to it & was settled & ready for work by noon. Set some traps & shot birds, caught one Geomys. Shot a Rabbit. A very warm day. Anemone patens in blossom, Elms & cedars & Argentea shepherdi in blossom. Farmers plowing, wheat mostly sown. Grass not started much.
