flowers, some bunches a foot across a solid mat of white flowers so thick & depressed that they look like a patch of snow.
[[margin]] Pinus flexilis along cañon. [[/margin]]
Artemesia trifida takes the place of tridentata & cava on the high divide. Stopped at noon about 18 miles from Beaver. Cynomys ludovocianus common till noon. 
About 5 miles after where we stopped for dinner we enter a deep rocky cañon & follow it about 4 miles. It has a rapid stream, brush, & the high rock walls.
Arctomys flaviventer (?) are common along the rocky sides of cañon. Shot 5 & saw 12. They are up on rocks looking out for danger & are hard to get at.
Spermophilus [[strikethrough]] townsendi (?)[[/strikethrough]] elegans first seen just before entering the canon - 
Saw no Chipmunks or Red Squirrels but both are said to be in the cañon.
Reached Mountain Howe ^[[insertion]] P.O. [[/insertion]] at 5 P.M.
Saw first Cynomys columbianus here. Went about 5 miles farther & camped. Saw a large Badger & shot at it but didnt get it. Camped 35 miles from Rock Creek. A cool & pleasant day but rained & hailed while we ate supper. skinned some things by firelight & then rolled in our blankets.
