The valley is broad & a large part of it wet & marshy. Alkalie is very abundant. There are several large ranches. It is but a few miles up to thick timber that seems to be spruce.
Snow comes down to near the edge of timber. Several patches of Picea pungens grow in the valley. The reek is very high & water runs through numerous channels over the valley. There are large thickets of large willow brush.
Saw very little game along the road.
It was cloudy & windy. Shot one P.D. & saw [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] 2 Spermophiles.
Stopped at night at [[underlined]] John Fourchie's place [[/underlined]]. Could not find any Thomomys hills near the ranch. saw one out by the hills but too far away to go to set traps. Rained all around us most all day & rained quite hard in the evening at the ranch.
Saw no new birds except an Osprey.

May 22 Got up early & started back, a clear warm day, frosty in morning.
Saw quite a number of [[strikethrough]] S. fras [[/strikethrough]] S. townsendi & tamias 4vittatus. killed 4 of each on the way home. Killed a Lepus campestris before starting.
