June 3 Slept well on my bed of pine bouts, got up early & shook a good layer of snow from my blanket. Got breakfast & took a lunch & traps & started up the creek.
[[left margin]] Smith Fork [[/left margin]]
Rode about [[underlined in red]] 6 miles [[/underlined in red]] & then tied my horse & went on afoot, made better progress through the timber & up the side of mt.
[[underlined in red]] Followed up the E. fork [[/underlined in red]] to near its source where it comes out from under deep snow in a caƱon high up. Climbed a steep slope to timberline. could go no farther for deep snow.
Found signs of Lagomys at timberline & saw a big Arctomys. The south slope was bare up to timberline. The rocks are broken & rough & piled up along the side below high cliffs. It is a red quartzite.
Guess I got about 10 miles from camp.
The stream tumbles & boils along down a deep gulch. Willows grow along it & some places are marshy. There are a number of ponds along the stream.
Snowed most of the time all day & still snowing in evining. Sometimes an inch of snow on the ground & again all melted. Caltha leptosepala are abundant all along from camp to timberline & look funny poking their heads out of the snow. Got [[underlined in red]] back to camp [[/underlined in red]] at 4 P.M. cold & dissagreeable. Got wet & took cold.
