Aug. 3. Sunday,
Packed up & started on & reached Nicholia before noon.
Got mail & a fresh supply of provision & came back 10 miles to where we had located a good place to camp & work. Camped at the break where Birch Creek has cut through the upper bank of lava rock & makes a gap through rocky banks 275 feet high. It gives a good variety of country to collect over - marshes along the creek & springs, sagebrush valley, broken rocky cliffs, & not far to heavy timber in the caƱons of the Mts. The barometer reads 6450 feet at camp.

" [[Ditto for: Aug.]] 4 Hunted & set traps. All kept busy & among us caught & killed Tamias, Thomomys, Spermophiles, Arvicolas & and a lot of birds.
A cold morning - 36 [[degree symbol]] at 6 A.M.
A very pleasant day.
We are camped close to the creek & for the first time on the trip have plenty of good grass & water. Have to burn cow chips mostly for wood.
