[[blank page]] [[end page]] [[start page]] Big Last R. now dries up long before reaching it but is said to have flowed into the sink during high water 6 years ago. The soil of the sink appears to be hard and firm, a kind of clay. Probably the water of the river spreads out & a large part of it is disposed of by evaporation. I set 38 traps from the ranch down to & around & in the sink. The signs of animals are not very numerous. A good many Dipodops holes seen. Killed one Tamias & saw several more, some down close to the sink. Killed a Rhyncophanes and an Otocoris. The barometer read at the ranch at 6 A.M. 5275 feet ^[[insertion]] 24.55 in. [[/insertion]] & in the sink at 10 A.M. 5150 feet ^[[insertion]] 24.64 in. [[/insertion]] & at the ranch again at 5 P.M. 5450 feet ^[[insertion]] 24.40 in. [[/insertion]]. Some clouds & small showers in the distance. Killed a Falco mexicana as it was presistantly diving after a chicken at the ranch. It had an Otocoris in its stomach, they kill a good many chickens for Mr. Richards. Mr. Richards & son are hauling timber from a caƱon 7 miles west of his place. They report a vast amount of red raspberries in the canon & a big Bear track & some deer tracks.
