Aug. 9. Staid at camp all day, putting up the skins taken on my trip to the valley & sighting my rifle & preparing for another trip to a high peak S.W. of camp.
A hard rain came up in P.M. but all but a corner went by without wetting us.
Barometer - 5 A.M. [[insertion]] 23.10 in. [[/insertion]] 6500 feet. showers around.

" [[ditto for: Aug.]] 10 Sunday. Barometer at 6 A.M. [[insertion]] 23.05 in. [[/insertion]] 6550 ft.
A heavy rain just above us in the valley & a little here. Showers around all day.

" [[ditto for: Aug.]] 11 Clouds thick & hanging low in morning but soon began clearing up. & turned out to be a pleasant day.
Dutcher & I took horses & started for Needle Peak about 10 miles S.W. to try & carry the barometer to the top. It appears to be the highest peak of either range.
We left camp at 7 A.M., crossed the creek & followed up a cañon through the mesa on the other side. Went through some rocky cañons full of old signs of Woodchucks, but no fresh signs.
Found on lava rock cañon full of Circocarpus ledifolius. Crossed a high mesa covered with splendid grass. Saw one Spermophilus townsendi on it & lots of their holes.
