Reached the lowest timber at mouth of a cañon that comes out from the mountain & picketed our horses at 10 A.M. This is at the base of the upright mountain & timber begins in the cañon & on N. slope of ridge at [[insertion]] 22.05 in. [[/insertion]] 7700 feet (aneroid uncorrected)
Followed up the narrow cañon bottom between high rocky sides & through thick timber of Pseudotsuga douglasi. Found the first Pinus flexilis at [[insertion]] 21.825 in. [[/insertion]] 7950 feet, A few Populus tremuloides are the only other tree until we find Picea englemani at [[insertion]] 21.00 [[/insertion]] 8950 on a steep slope facing 20 [[degree symbol]] E. of N.
Following up the narrow bed of the cañon we heard from a slope of slid rocks the first Lagomys' cry at 7800 feet. Several more were heard, but they were very shy & we did not see any until reaching a large slide at 8100 feet. There were at least 3 in this. We saw 2 & succeded in taking one of them. The others went into their holes & would not come out again.
This was the highest that we heard them though Dutcher found a hole & some dung about 500 feet above timberline, - 10500.
Sciurus & Tamias lateralis & another Tamias are common all through the timber.
Goose berries & 2 kinds of currants are common in the cañon.
