Oct. 27. Could not get my gun from the Express office till after 9 oclock & so did not get started till 10. Followed down the river & railroad about 10 miles till well into the Cañon & then camped -
I can't make distances fit together, They said it was 28 miles to Carlin, we came what I should think was 10 miles & they say it is 11 from here to Carlin -
Camped at 2 P.M. Eat lunch & began setting traps & kept at it till dark, set 65, some for Neotoma & most of them for Perognathus, Found good Perognathus holes on a sandy slope in the cañon -
There are some Neotomas in the holes in the sandstone cliffs on the side of the cañon.
The cañon is not more than 200 feet high & not steep, only rocky in places -
A few cedars grow on the hills, willows grow along the river. There is meadow most of the way along the river but narrow & broken - Tetradimea & Artemesia & Sarcobotus vermiculatus & Atriplex confertifolia grow along the valley & on the sides of the cañon,
Found a lot of dung of Arctomys among the rocks. There are lots of trout in the river, Salmon trout that weigh nearly 3 pounds.
A cold morning, warm day & dusty.
Broke my thermometer -
