[[strikethrough]] Oct. [[/strikethrough]] Nov. 1. Went to Battle Mountain & got our mail & some supplies & had some horseshoes fitted up to take along.
When we left town it was 3 oclock & we went down by the river & camped for the night. There is no water for the first 20 miles on the Austin road, so we could not start out so late.
Set Thomomys traps & made up the Thomomys caught last night. They are abundant in the meadow land of the valley, make large holes & hills. Their holes are so large that they can take a no. 0 trap down their hole, & I have to stake the traps
Battle Mountain is in the greasebrush edge of the valley. The valley is wide & mostly covered with big grass.
Small groups & ranges of low, lava rock treeless, mountains are all around.
Some peaks may be 2000 feet above the valley. A little snow lies on the highest peak south of town.
The higher part of the valley is covered with Sarcobatus in bunches, between which the bare ground has a white crust of alkalie.
A clear cold morning & warm day -
Got the 3 gallons of alcohol sent by Palmer.
