[[blank page]] [[end page]] [[start page]] [[underline]] 1890 [[/underline]] [[underline]] Nov. 6 [[/underline] Started soon after daylight & in about a mile came to big hot springs & a ranch. Found that we were 35 miles from Battle Mountain & that we came 31 miles yesterday. It began to snow just as we started & kept at it up about 3 hours. Half an inch of snow lay on the ground at one time & made wheeling hard. It soon went off, but kept snowing in squalls all day. The mountains east of us were white, those west of the valley were bare - We followed the east side of the valley till entering the canon -- it is about the same as before, a wide level valley covered with Atriplex confertifolia & some Sarcobatus & tetradinea & Artemesia & Erotia lanata. the last very thick in places. Passed through the cañon & stopped at a ranch 25 miles from our last camp & 35 from Austin. The cañon is of no account - Is 200 or 300 feet deep, not very steep, the sides of lava rock, no water in it at all, a few Cedars on the north slopes of the hills. Neotoma & Hesperomys seem to be common in it. Dipodops & Perognathus & Onychomys tracks and holes are numerous all along the valley. A lot of thomomys hills near the station 11 miles south of Watts. Snowy, windy, raw, & disagreeable--.
