[[underline]] Nov. 14 [[/underline]] Went to Austin in morning & got the mail. A letter of instructions & a rodometer - Am glad to get the rodometer - had to sudy it out a little but soon got the hang of it.
When I returned to camp found Henry with all packed & hitched up - Crossed the R.R at Austin Junction & took the valley road up Reese River. There is a little water in Reese R. at the Junction
There is a strip of grassy land along the river. Then the valley slopes back both ways to the foot hills on each side.
The valley widens out to 10 or 12 miles between the base of the Mts. on each side.
The fall of the river is slight. The valley appears level along the river. A crust of alkalie & salt covers the bottom of the valley & the plants on it are mostly of salt loving species;.. Salt-grass, Salicornia - Sarcobatus vermiculatus; Telradymia & Atriplex confertifolia come down into all but the lowest & saltiest places - A little higher up they hold their own against Artemesia tridentata.

The mountains to the west are low & bare. a few scrub cedars & pines on some hills - The mountains to the east all higher, rough, & full of caƱons.
Cedars & Pinus monophylla begin at
