Caught 2 Arvicola pallidus, a Hesperomys, & an Evotomys or Arvicola - am not sure but all the Evotomes I have been getting are Arvicolas. Henry caught a Neotoma.
Packed up & started up valley. In about two miles came to the last ranch in Indian Valley. It is a large stock ranch, is 4 miles from the divide between Indian Creek & Cloverdale Creek. The valley broadens out here into a big basin with lots of springs & large meadow - The hills around the basin are smoothe & grassy in places, again broken & rocky. Cedars & PiƱon & Circocarpus grow over the hills but not in the valley. The slope is gradual up to the divide, but it is a long one. I should think the divide was 3000 feet above the mouth of Reese River. It is 62 miles from Austin.
Tetradymia comes up into the basin but not to the divide by about 300 feet. On the south slope it comes up higher but not quite to the divide. This seems to be its upper limit & due to altitude & slope exposure.
Artemesia tridentata goes above the divide & is abundant. The short leaved Artemesia of which I sent specimens from near Carlin, Nev., is common through the basin & on the divide.
There are no high mountains near the divide but Arc Dome rises over east of Reese River
