[[underline]] December 1. [[/underline]] Packed up before daylight & got as early a start as possible. The first 7 miles down the cañon showed little change in plants or country. Rocky. Piñon & Cedar covered hills on both sides, in places the cañon is quite narrow & with rock walls, most of the way it is open & a narrow valley along the dry creek bed. The creek runs down a few miles & then is dry to Cloverdale. The descent is rapid. At 10 miles below the divide & 5 miles above Cloverdale we reach the lower limit of Piñon & Cedar in the creek valley. Here also the first Sarcobatus vermiculatus & Atriplex canescens are met with, as they extend up from the valley. An Ephedra [[blank space]], not seen before begins at the lower limit of Cedar & Pine & extends down onto the dryest part of the plain.
The first holes & tracks of Dipodops seen at this part of the valley. No more Tamias pictus seen. The hills of a large Thomomys are common at Cloverdale, Saw lots of Amphispiza b - nev.- just above Cloverdale.

Reached Cloverdale at 11 A.M. It is 15 2/3 miles from the divide. It is only one ranch - Mr. Bell's. They have a large family & have a school & P.O. all at home, A pretty school - warm also. They seem to be intelligent & very nice people. Spent an hour in talking & getting some hay & a piece of beef.

The words canon and Pinon used a tilde, I was not sure if I was supposed to insert.
