A large Thomomys is common in the valley & throws up large hills. There are lots of little Thomomys hills on these mountains. Saw tracks of a Tamias leucurus or of a Spermophile in the valley.
Mr. Bell's son told me there were White tailed Chipmunks here & also big, red headed ones, but said they had all denned up. He showed me 2 big Tarantulas & an "Idaho Devil" in a bottle. He got them at home.
Lepus texianus(?) tracks are common in the valley.
We found the first Erotia lanata on the hills where we camp.
A very warm & pleasant day, but clouded up at 4 oclock & looks like storm, though still warm in evining.
P.S. - Forgot to mention a low & very spiny V Opuntia of the arborescent kind that we saw around Cloverdale - It is the first one seen this trip & has an Arizona look. It looks like those at the pass in the Black Mts. above Ft. Mohave There is a small, flat Opuntia common on the high part of the valley. A little spiny, green barked plant is common on the dry valley. It seems to be a Koèberlina, is about a foot high. looks like K. spinosa. A yellow stemmed, red headed Eriogonum is abundant on the hills, Erotia lanata is abundant high up, not in valley
