We follow a sandy wash down the west slope of the Pilot Mts. It is a long slope with a rapid fall. The valley that the R.R. is in is much lower than any we have been in lately.

We reach Sulphor Spring at 3 P.M. & camp - It is still 7 miles to Soda Springs. Camped here so as to set some traps & pack some things to send by mail when we get to town.

The Pilot Mts. are partly red lava rock, partly black limerock, part granite & part conglomerate. The plants are about the same as yesterday, no more arborescent Opuntias seen - both kinds of Artemesia common on the mountains but neither found in the valleys - No PiƱons.

The valleys have a black appearance, except Erotia grows, which is due to the dry, dark colored little shrubs that cover them & to black pebbles, The mountains, too, look black generally - Sulphor Spring is in the foothills just at the edge of the valley. The water is good & pure but warm - It is carried in pipes across the valley to a mine on the other side. 10 miles I should think.

A cloudy day & windy, so we saw no animals & only few birds. A Jay, a Shrike, some Amphispiza nevadensis & Otocores.

Saw Jack Rabbit tracks.
