Came down into Deep Spring Valley & reached Mr. Gilberts ranch at noon.

Deep Spring Valley is about 12 miles long & half as wide. longest east & west, oval, It is entirely surrounded by low, bare, rocky mountains. There is a lake in the S.W. corner
A stream flows through from the opposite corner to the lake. It is an inland drainage system all in a nutshell. The soil of the valley is loose sand. Atriplex canescens & Erotia lanata are the principal plants on the sandy part. Higher up on the edges the ground is stony & other plants grow - There is meadow land around the lake. There are 2 ranches in the valley & a prospectors camp -

Did not see much signs of animal life along the valley, Some Thomomys hills & holes of mice & 2 small Dipodomys, no large Dipodomys holes. Saw tracks of a Lepus texianus. Saw a Tamias leucurus, & their tracks, also houses of Neotoma. Camped before dark at west end of valley, near Antelope Spr.
Set 25 traps.

The highest divide is still between us & Owen River, but I am not afraid of the snow now. They have lied to us all along about it.

Still & warm enough to be pleasant in P.M. in the valley. Patches of snow lie in this valley.
