[[underline]] Dec. 9 [[/underline]]. Caught 2 Dipodops, nothing else,
Ground froze hard, nothing seemed to stir - very frosty, 17 [[degree symbol]] above 0. clear & still.

Did not get a very early start, Began climbing the wash up the White Mts. Followed a crooked caƱon between high rocks, soon reached timber & snow - It is about 6 miles up to the divide. Cedar & Pinus monophylla cover the upper part of the Mts. Snow begins at edge of valley & is about 6 inches deep on top. Should think the divide was 2500 feet above Deep Spring Valley & 4000 above Owen River. The slope down the west side is not very steep but is steady down hill for about 12 miles. Snow comes down about half way, trees do not. There is a toll house half way down where they charge [[strikethrough]] a [[/strikethrough]] $1.25, though I could not see where they had done much to the road. There is a large spring at the toll house, & a flock of about 20 Quails (Calipepla californica) were close to the house.
They would not let me shoot them. Saw Quail tracks at Antelope Spring in Deep Spring Valley, the first signs of Quail on the trip. Saw quite a number of deer tracks on the Mts., also Coyote & little Fox track & Lynx tracks. Saw 2 Tamias leucurus & lots of their tracks all across the range, also tracks of a smaller Tamias & Hesperomys.
