tracks & tracks a a little Rabbit & of a large Rabbit, larger than L. texianus. Cyanocephalus cyanocephalus are common - also Aphelocoma & Parius inornatus, & Juncos & Zonotrichas

Reached Owen River about sundown & camped on east side near [[Alveoid?]]. Shot 4 Callipepla californica from a flock of 15 or 20. Saw lots of holes in the sand where I want to trap. A Dipodomys came close to me in evening as I sat by the fire writing. Owen River Valley seems to be quite a fertile region & is a nice looking valley. It is much warmer here than where we have been. The great white Sierra Nevadas rise to a great height & abruptly from the west side of the valley. There is heavy timber on them about half way up. The tops are solid white. The plants here in the valley are not very different from those of the other valleys this side of Cloverdale. Atriplex & Sarcobatus are conspicuous & even Artimisia tridentata comes to the bottom of the valley. The streams of the valley are high. Grass is brown & dead. Salt grass & Rye grass are abundant. The soil is alkaline.

Came about 17 miles today, 24 miles from Gelberts, in Deep Spring Valley, 34 mi. from Piepers.
