camped near edge of Owen Lake but too late to set traps. Killed some Shovelers & small birds, Nelson got a Harperhynchus lecouti. There are thousands of birds round the lake, Otocoris, Anthus, Avocets, Several small Snipe, Curlews, & Ducks.
The Shovelers are very numerous.
Rode along the lake shore for several miles -
The shore is sandy, flat, & crusted over with soda & etc- Salt grass & sedges grow along much of the shore, even in clear soda one inch deep. Back a little from the lake are great sand piles, half covered with Atriplex Sarcobatus & Salicornia. A number of large springs of pure but warm, water boil up along the edge of the lake.
I saw tracks of a little fox, size of V. macrotis, & of skunks in sand along shore. There are lots of old dead ducks, grebes & gulls along shore.
A cold morning at camp, 15[[degree symbol]], in early morning. 28[[degree symbol]] at Keeler in morning. It is much warmer at Keeler than at our last camp though only about 50 feet lower. We are between [[strikethrough]] low [[/strikethrough]] high mountains at Long Pine. Nelson caught a Dipodops on east side of river nearer to river than any we got before.
