back about 3 miles where it joins the foothills at 200 feet above the lake, where Larrhea mexicana begins. It is one of the characteristic plants the rest of the way. Atriplex confertifolia extends from Owen Lake over to Darwin, also A. canescens & the small leaved Atriplex. Opuntia arborescens begins at 4225 feet & is common from there. 2 kinds of short Devils Head cacti begin in the cañon at about 4000. Yucca , begins at Owens Sta. & is common above there to top of divide and over the Table Mts. to our left.
We cross a joint of the Coso Mts. where they are low, & the Yucca trees are large, & common on the ridge, some of them are 15 feet high. It is the same as the short leaved ones in Detrital Val., Arizona. After crossing the first ridge & down into the second wash we follow up through deep, loose, granite sand to the summit. The hills and most of the country around is lava till we get near the summit where it is all granite – a soft, much worn granite. 
The roads crosses a broad, sloping plain of sand, scantily covered with bunches of small shrubs & Yucca & bunch grass, but well inhabited by
