When we camped at Maturango Spring, the feed is fairly luxurient and fresh & green. In coming up out of the valley we met Cowania mex. & the green Ephedra at 5250 feet, both are common above that. Artemisia tridentata begins at our camp – 6150 – & is common.
Yuccas are common on the Maturango Mts. up to where Pinus monophylla begins at about 6500. I was only up to 6325 where P. monophylla covered down to on the north slopes. This is the only tree to be seen & is only thinly scattered over the [[strikethrough]] Maturango [[/strikethrough]] Argus & Coso Mts. on each side of the valley. Both ranges are capped with a little snow. All the mountains in sight are bare & rough. The Coso Mts. are of coarse granite till we get to south end of valley where it is covered with black lava. The [[strikethrough]] Maturango [[/strikethrough]] Argus Mts. are variegated & bright colored. We came a little over 13 miles today but have so heavy a load that the team did not get in till after dark & were about used up too. Had to go a mile off from the road for water. Saw 2 Coyotes at & tried to get near enough for a shot but failed.
