It is the most conspicuous plant of the valley, several other small, dry plants are scattered over the valley, a few Opuntia arborescens ([[female symbol]]) & a flat Opuntia & a big Echinocactus. Nelson found a Cucurberta in a cañon at 3000 feet. Yuccas do not come down to the valley at all. A large area in the bottom of the valley is bare, alkalie – or soda –, flats, without vegetation. Salt grass & Salicornia and Suaeda grow around the edge of the flats. The is a strip of Prosopis julifolia along the edge of the flat on the west side, & it is common in large bunches of small trees all along the east side of flat near east edge of valley. It is mostly on moist ground near edge of flat but where it is quite sandy. Prosopis pubescens is common around the ford at Hot Springs. We saw some big Neotoma nests among the Mesquits. Dipodomys deserti holes are abundant in sandy low part of valley. Dipodops, or a little Dipodomys ranges higher. We camped at Hot Spr., about 3 miles north of Surprise Canon, the spring is not hot. There is quite a steam of water running from it & quite a pond below
